Activities came to a halt across Anambra, Enugu, and Ebonyi states on Monday as residents observed the #FreeNnamdikanunow protests led by human rights activist Omoyele Sowore. Major markets, schools, banks, and public spaces in Enugu and Ebonyi were shut down, while roads in the region saw minimal traffic amid tight security with police and military vehicles, plus surveillance helicopters.
Shop owners and residents stayed indoors in solidarity, with some fearing violence. The police, however, assured the public of calm, stating there was no actual protest but heightened caution. In Anambra, Onitsha’s streets were also empty as Governor Chukwuma Soludo continued his election campaign uninterrupted.
