OGUN STATE ISSUES FLOOD ALERT: RESIDENTS IN RIVERBANK AND WETLAND AREAS URGED TO PREPARE

The Ogun State Government is warning residents living along the Ogun River and in wetland areas to brace for potential flooding from October 20 to November 3 due to expected overflow. Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Ola Oresanya, shared the alert in Abeokuta, highlighting areas like Akute, Alagbole, Isheri, and parts of Abeokuta including Lafenwa and Enugada as likely to be affected.

The overflow is linked to controlled water releases from Oyan Dam caused by heavy rains in the north and increased tidal levels. Oresanya urged caution, advising residents to avoid the riverbank and move to higher grounds if they live in wetlands. The government, working with the Ogun Osun River Basin Authority, has dredged tributaries to lessen the impact, but residents were advised not to panic as natural water levels will normalize in about 10 days. Fish farmers were also told to harvest early to prevent loss.
