The Federal High Court in Abuja saw a halt in court activities on Monday, blocking police efforts to restrain the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest led by Omoyele Sowore and others. Despite a heavy police presence and movement restrictions around key areas including Aso Rock Villa and the National Assembly, all courtrooms were locked up by 9:30 am, leaving no judges to hear the case.
The court had earlier approved a motion restricting protesters from sensitive sites but upheld the right to peaceful assembly outside those zones. Police had warned of heightened security measures and warned groups to comply with court orders.
This development delays the legal battle between the government and activists calling for the release of detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu. Sowore, a vocal critic and protest organizer, had mobilized support for a peaceful demonstration despite the restrictions.
