UBEC CHAMPIONS SIGN LANGUAGE TRAINING TO BOOST INCLUSIVE EDUCATION IN NIGERIA

Breaking barriers for hearing-impaired students! The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) is pushing sign language education in all basic schools to make learning truly inclusive.

Executive Secretary Aisha Garba revealed a new policy institutionalizing sign language across Nigerian schools during the 2025 International Day of the Girl Child celebrations themed “Lead a Change: Learn Sign Language Today.” She emphasized removing communication barriers so every girl, regardless of ability, can be heard and empowered to lead. UBEC’s vision includes sign language interpreters in public spaces and schools equipped with ramps for physical accessibility.

Minister of State for Education Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad echoed the call for sign language to bridge classroom communication gaps and stressed coordinated efforts for equal opportunities for all girls.
