Rivers State is hitting reset! The Executive Council has revoked a huge ₦134 billion contract awarded for renovating the state secretariat, citing procedural lapses and safety concerns.
The contract, given to China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) during emergency rule under former administrator Vice Admiral Ibas, has been cancelled. The council, led by Governor Siminalayi Fubara, ordered CCECC to refund the ₦20 billion mobilization fee already paid.
Permanent Secretary Dr. Austin Ezekiel-Hart explained the contract was awarded hurriedly without following due process. Now, the state plans fresh bidding for this and three other projects, including shoreline protection and community reclamation works.
Other moves approved include setting up committees to create Computer-Based Test centres and tackle flooding issues—showing the government’s commitment to transparency, job creation, education, and infrastructure development.
