NIGERIA’S FERTILITY RATE DIPS TO 4.8, MARKING PROGRESS BUT CHALLENGES REMAIN

Nigeria is experiencing a meaningful demographic shift! The 2024 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey shows the total fertility rate dropping from 5.3 in 2018 to 4.8 in 2024, reflecting more access to family planning.

Minister Dr. Iziaq Salako highlights modest growth in modern contraceptive use and better maternal health coverage, yet urges more efforts especially to lower neonatal deaths that remain high. Child mortality rates are improving, but slower in newborns, with under-five deaths decreasing significantly.

The survey points to urgent national gaps needing coordinated policy reforms, community engagement, and stronger health investments. Partners like ActionAid and World Bank stand ready to support Nigeria’s quest to ensure better health and prosperity through data-driven strategies.
