Prof. Akin Abayomi, Lagos State Commissioner for Health, has raised alarm over lives lost on Lagos roads due to bystanders filming accidents instead of helping first responders. Speaking at the 2025 World Trauma Day symposium, he emphasized that saving lives is a shared responsibility of every Lagosian, urging respect for ambulances and prioritizing prompt care over videos.
Lagos’ advanced ambulance service, LASAMBUS, now operates a fleet of 36 ambulances including mobile ICUs, staffed by trained professionals. Efficient pre-hospital care through LASAMBUS leads to higher survival rates compared to transport by bystanders. The government is expanding trauma centers statewide and partnering with private sector allies to further improve emergency response. Stories of trauma survivors like Mr. Andrew highlight the impact of coordinated trauma care.
Speakers urged motorists to change dangerous behaviors, give way to ambulances, and promote a culture of prevention and responsiveness. The symposium closed with commitments to enhanced public awareness and inter-agency collaboration to reduce needless road deaths.
