KENYA LOSES $158 MILLION DUE TO DELAYS IN BIOTECHNOLOGY ADOPTION, SAYS AATF

Kenya’s slow embrace of biotechnology has cost the country dearly! The African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF) reveals Kenya lost 20.4 billion Kenyan shillings (about $158 million) over five years due to delays in adopting biotech crops.

Dr. Daniel Willy of AATF highlighted how biotechnology, such as Bt maize that resists pests, can boost food production and security. Introducing vitamin A in maize and improving crop shelf life are other biotech achievements. Nigeria’s success with Pod Borer Cowpea and Bt maize shows Africa’s huge potential.

Misinformation and conspiracy theories, however, continue to slow progress, and Kenya risks falling behind in the global biotech boom. Accelerating adoption is crucial for farmers, food security, and economic growth.
