The UN is gearing up for a major makeover! Secretary-General António Guterres unveiled plans to make the United Nations more streamlined, effective, and ready for today’s challenges.
At the UN General Assembly in New York, Guterres laid out the UN80 Initiative, targeting reforms across the UN’s core areas: peace and security, sustainable development, and human rights. His vision? One unified system that cuts duplication, improves funding, and maximizes impact for people worldwide.
Part of the plan includes forming a special UN80 team to push proposals forward, sometimes with member states’ input, sometimes through the Secretary-General’s authority.
Among the big ideas are merging key entities like the UN Development Programme and UN Office for Project Services to create a stronger engine for sustainable development, and combining UN Women with the United Nations Population Fund for a more powerful voice on gender equality.
Guterres emphasized that the success of these reforms depends on member states’ support, aiming to build a nimble, coherent, and cost-effective UN fit for a rapidly changing world.
