The fight is on! Nigeria Labour Congress slams the Federal Government’s “No Work, No Pay” directive on striking university lecturers, insisting workers must be paid to work.
NLC President Joe Ajaero made this clear after meeting Abia Governor Alex Otti in Nvosi. He called the government’s policy “unjust and insensitive,” saying it’s illogical to expect productivity when workers aren’t paid. The ongoing strikes are due to unfulfilled agreements with the government since 2009— “the cause is non-payment, the consequence is no work,” Ajaero said.
He warned the government to fix the root issues rather than punishing workers and revealed plans for education sector unions to meet soon for a united response. Ajaero stressed that neglecting education harms Nigeria’s future and drives teachers and lecturers abroad. Addressing labour party disputes and workers’ welfare in Abia, he urged prompt salary adjustments to maintain harmony.
