Nigerian electricity users get a boost as NERC releases N28 billion to provide free prepaid meters, closing the huge metering gap and enhancing transparency in billing.
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has approved N28 billion to supply free meters to all unmetered Band A customers and to expedite metering for Band B customers. This is part of Tranche B of the Meter Acquisition Fund (MAF), building on a previous N21 billion tranche.
The funds will be shared among electricity distribution companies (DisCos) based on their market shares, with a deadline to complete installations by December 31, 2025. DisCos must procure meters transparently and install them promptly, or face penalties.
NERC’s move aims to close Nigeria’s large metering deficit, estimated at over seven million protect revenue, reduce billing disputes, and ensure customers pay only for electricity used, all at no upfront cost to consumers.
