Nigeria’s election season just got a powerful new ally! The European Union and National Peace Committee have teamed up to launch an Election Security Information Hub, using data and tech to curb violence and boost election credibility.
The EU and Nigeria’s National Peace Committee (NPC) are stepping up efforts against electoral violence with the launch of the Election Security Information (ESI) Hub in Abuja. This platform supports credible, peaceful, and inclusive elections by collecting and analyzing real-time data on election-related security incidents.
Mr. Ruben Aguilera from the EU explained that the hub moves beyond just goodwill, it uses evidence-based data to track electoral offenses and violence, helping stakeholders respond quickly. Recent worries remain about security in areas like Anambra, where armed groups threaten peaceful voting.
Retired Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, NPC Chairman, highlighted that credible elections rely on security and trust in the process. The ESI Hub will transform early warnings into swift, coordinated actions to prevent violence and conflicts.
Fr. Atta Barkindo, NPC’s Executive Director, sees the hub as a leap from promises to practical accountability, backed by solid data instead of opinions. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has applauded the initiative, confident it will strengthen election management.
Together, this partnership hopes to make Nigeria’s elections safer, fairer, and truly inclusive.
