WHO NAMES DR. PAVEL URSU NEW REPRESENTATIVE TO NIGERIA TO BOOST HEALTH PARTNERSHIPS

Dr. Pavel Ursu has been appointed as the new World Health Organization (WHO) Representative to Nigeria, aiming to strengthen health partnerships and improve healthcare outcomes nationwide. Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Amb. Yusuf Tuggar, welcomed Ursu, highlighting the COVID-19 pandemic as a key wake-up call to invest in resilient health systems and local vaccine production.

Tuggar emphasized that health is a foundation for prosperity, empowering people to overcome poverty, and praised Nigeria’s commitment to Universal Health Coverage and strategic health diplomacy.

Dr. Ursu, bringing over 20 years of global health experience, outlined six pillars guiding WHO’s partnership with Nigeria: boosting domestic health financing, expanding primary healthcare, enhancing emergency preparedness, advancing digital health, supporting local manufacturing, and strengthening health diplomacy.

Ursu praised Nigeria’s strides in eradicating wild poliovirus and reaching over 106 million children through immunization. He pledged to work closely with the government and partners to drive measurable improvements in public health.
