UNILAG HOSTS INDUSTRY LEADERS TO SHAPE AFRICA’S AI FUTURE

Captains of industry gathered at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) to discuss “Equitable Partnerships and the Future of AI in Africa.” Vice Chancellor Prof. Folasade Ogunsola opened the event, stressing that AI is not just the future, it’s the present opportunity for Africa to leapfrog in education, healthcare, governance, and industry through innovation rooted in mutual respect and shared growth.

She highlighted UNILAG’s commitment to becoming a leading hub for AI research that reflects African realities alongside global standards. Prof. Ogunsola challenged students to shape AI ethically as a tool for liberation, not dependency.

Keynote speakers included Mrs. Yvonne Ike of Bank of America, who praised Nigeria’s creative potential and called for strategic global partnerships, and Mr. Emmanuel Lubanzadio of OpenAI, who announced the launch of the OpenAI Academy in Africa to build capacity and solve critical problems through AI.

The Minister of Communications, Dr. Bosun Tijani, represented by Dr. Olubunmi Ajala, also attended, signaling government support for this AI renaissance.
