FEDERAL FIRE SERVICE LAUNCHES TASK FORCE TO AUDIT BUILDINGS FOR FIRE SAFETY

The Federal Fire Service (FFS) has set up a special task force to inspect public and private buildings nationwide to boost fire safety and prevent disasters. FFS Controller General Samuel Olumode says this move shows their commitment to proactive risk management amid rising fire outbreaks in Nigeria.

The task force will map buildings, assess fire risks, check compliance with safety rules, and recommend enforcement policies. Owners and managers of buildings are urged to cooperate fully during this critical audit.

In 2024 alone, Nigeria lost over 100 lives and ₦67.1 billion in property to fires, while FFS saved property worth about ₦1.9 trillion and rescued nearly 31,000 people. The rise in incidents, especially during harmattan, is linked to safety lapses at fuel stations and by gas users.
