The Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN), FCT chapter, reveals that poultry accounts for more than 25% of Nigeria’s agricultural GDP and provides jobs to over 25 million Nigerians, about 10% of the population. Nigeria is Africa’s largest egg producer, with over 650 million tonnes produced annually.
PAN officials highlight challenges facing mainly smallholder farmers—such as high feed costs, limited finance, and poor government support—that need urgent attention to boost production. They stress that reducing feed costs and improving access to markets will lower egg prices and support both producers and consumers.
World Egg Day celebrates the egg’s role as an affordable, nutrient-packed protein source, urging government incentives and support to sustain the sector’s growth and food security.
