The National Council of State has given a unanimous nod to Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN) from Kogi State as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). President Bola Ahmed Tinubu introduced Amupitan as the first nominee from North-Central Nigeria to fill the vacancy left by Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who served from 2015 until October 2025.
Known for his integrity and apolitical stance, Amupitan is a respected Law Professor at the University of Jos and currently serves as Deputy Vice-Chancellor there. His nomination will now move to the Senate for screening as required by the constitution. With a rich academic career and expertise in corporate law, Amupitan brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this crucial electoral role.
