NIGERIA’S $2 BILLION BROADBAND PROJECT TO BOOST GDP, DRIVE DIGITAL INCLUSION

Minister Tijani unveils a bold plan to connect every local government and unlock the nation’s digital potential.

Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, announced a $2 billion broadband initiative aiming for universal coverage across all 774 local governments within three years. Speaking at the 31st Nigerian Economic Summit, he said the hybrid funding model involves 49% government and 51% private investment. The project will enhance digital inclusion, support innovation hubs, and expand rural internet access—potentially raising GDP by 2% annually. Partnerships with organizations like World Bank, IFC, and Africa Finance Corporation underpin the plan, alongside training programs to build digital skills, particularly in AI and cybersecurity.
