Teacher shortage threatens education quality; union calls on government to act swiftly.
Kogi’s Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS) says 2,871 more teachers are urgently needed to fill gaps in public secondary schools. ASUSS Chairman Emejeh Ogwu applauded the 1,108 teachers recruited in 2023 but stressed that the state still faces a critical shortfall worsened by retirements and transfers. The union also called for better teacher welfare, infrastructure improvement, pension harmonisation, and a motorcycle loan scheme to boost mobility. Government officials affirm the issue is being addressed with recruitment plans already before the governor.
