UN SPECIAL ENVOY WARNS OF ROAD FATALITIES “SILENT PANDEMIC” IN NIGERIA

Hook: Jean Todt urges urgent action as FRSC ramps up efforts amid rising deaths on Nigerian roads.

United Nations Road Safety Envoy Jean Todt called road deaths a global “silent pandemic” during his visit to Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Abuja. Todt praised Nigeria’s progress but stressed the need to fully adopt the Safe System Approach—combining education, strict law enforcement, safer vehicles, road quality, and post-crash care—to reduce profligate fatalities. FRSC Marshal Shehu Mohammed reaffirmed the corps’ commitment, highlighting Nigeria’s rising road deaths amid over 5,200 crashes and nearly 2,900 fatalities in early 2025. He called for collective efforts from government, unions, and road users to save lives and improve safety culture.
