NISO REPORTS 1,100MW POWER DROP DUE TO GAS SUPPLY STRIKE

Industrial action in gas sector triggers major power shortfall; urgent grid stabilization measures activated.

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) announced a sharp drop in national grid power generation from over 4,300MW to about 3,200MW on Sept 28, caused by a strike within the gas supply chain by PENGASSAN workers. To avert a nationwide blackout, NISO ramped up hydropower output by 400MW, balanced loads in real time, and implemented selective load shedding as a last resort. These swift, evidence-based measures helped maintain grid stability and protected critical power supplies during the crisis. PENGASSAN’s strike stems from grievances over alleged mass sackings at Dangote Refinery, prompting federal government intervention through high-level talks.

Effective power sector management depends on coordinated operations, rapid response capabilities, and diversification of energy sources. Nigeria’s increasing investment in hydro and renewable power alongside robust contingency plans ensures grid resilience despite disruptions in gas-fired generation. Balancing demand and supply, maintaining frequency, and protecting infrastructure are vital to preventing blackouts and ensuring steady electricity access nationwide.
