LAGOS VOWS STRONGER PROSECUTION TO CURB SEXUAL AND GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE

Hook: Lagos boosts fight against SGBV with tougher laws, better support, and community engagement.

Lagos State Attorney-General Lawal Pedro announced plans to strengthen prosecution of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) offenses to tackle the rising menace. Speaking at the Governor’s Commendation and Awards Night, Pedro stressed holistic justice—legal aid, psychosocial support, and shelters—are key to protecting survivors. The state recorded 8,692 SGBV cases from August 2024 to July 2025, with over 140 convictions secured. Pedro urged collective action for prevention, advocacy, and education while spotlighting frontline heroes from police to social workers. The Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency’s Executive Secretary, Mrs. Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, highlighted ongoing challenges like stigma but affirmed progress in awareness and survivor support. Residents are encouraged to report abuse via the toll-free line 0800033333.
