JOURNALISM MOURNS AS PROMISING ARISE NEWS REPORTER KILLED IN ROBBERY

The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has been thrown into mourning following the tragic death of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a vibrant news anchor and reporter with Arise News, who was killed during an armed robbery at her Katampe, Abuja residence.
Her death has left a gaping wound in the journalism community. Colleagues describe her as not only a consummate professional devoted to amplifying the voices of the voiceless but also as one of the brightest hopes for the future of Nigerian journalism.
In a statement signed by its President, Eze Anaba, and General Secretary, Onuoha Ukeh, the Guild lamented the increasing dangers Nigerians face in their homes and on the streets. The group described Maduagwu’s killing as a painful reminder of the insecurity that has become a daily nightmare — from armed robbery to kidnapping, banditry and insurgency.
The NGE called on the government and security agencies to urgently tackle the root causes of insecurity and ensure that Somtochukwu’s killers are tracked down and brought to justice.
“At this difficult time, we stand in solidarity with Arise News and the broader journalism community,” the Guild stated. “May the memory of this talented young journalist who died in her prime inspire excellence in journalism, even in the face of adversity.”
The nation now mourns not just a professional lost to violence, but a life full of promise cut short.
