FG REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO TACKLE UNSAFE ABORTION, CUT MATERNAL DEATHS IN NIGERIA

Unsafe abortion kills thousands yearly; government pushes for awareness, better healthcare access.

The Federal Government has pledged strong action against unsafe abortion, a leading cause of maternal mortality in Nigeria, during the International Safe Abortion Conference in Abuja. Dr Binyerem Ukaire highlighted 456,000 unsafe abortions occur yearly in Nigeria, contributing to 10% of maternal deaths in a country with over 1,000 deaths per 100,000 live births. Experts stressed the need for better contraceptive access, legal safe abortion services, and post-abortion care, especially in underserved areas. The government is training health workers and improving data systems while addressing stigma and legal barriers. Advocates called for urgent reforms to save lives and shift abortion into essential healthcare discourse.
