LNRBA TO PRODUCE OVER 10,000 TONNES OF PADDY RICE IN KWARA AND KOGI

Solar-powered irrigation boosts rice output as clean rivers sustain communities.

The Lower Niger River Basin Authority (LNRBA) expects over 10,000 tonnes of paddy rice from irrigation projects in Kwara and Kogi states this dry season. The Shonga irrigation scheme in Kwara will produce more than 3,000 tonnes, while collaboration with Kogi aims to yield over 7,000 tonnes, plus 2,000 tonnes from Girinyan. LNRBA has equipped 200 farmers with solar-powered pumps, cutting fossil fuel use and boosting efficiency. MD George Olumoroti stressed protecting rivers as vital for water, agriculture, and communities, urging safe practices to maintain clean waterways. President Tinubu’s approval for expanded basin projects supports irrigation, flood control, and environmental sustainability.
