As the world marks World News Day on September 28, the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) is stepping up to celebrate the power of fact-based journalism while sounding a clear call for press freedom and truthful reporting in Nigeria.
In a heartfelt statement, the NGE salutes journalists at home and abroad who tirelessly chase the facts, reminding everyone why quality journalism matters now more than ever. But they don’t sugarcoat it – the challenges facing Nigerian journalists, especially efforts to muzzle press freedom, remain a big concern.
The guild promises to keep standing firm against harassment, intimidation, and any attempts to block the free flow of accurate information. They urge every journalist to reject fake news and propaganda, and instead hold high the principles of fairness, objectivity, and accuracy. The NGE also challenges the government to stop using repressive laws like the Cybercrime Act to intimidate reporters and to honour the Freedom of Information Act by being transparent and cooperative. They emphasize that free access to credible information is the backbone of a healthy democracy.
For Nigerians, the message is clear: choose truth and support the journalists who risk so much to deliver it. Because when the media is gagged, democracy and freedom of expression suffer. Happy World News Day from the Nigerian Guild of Editors – championing truth, defending press freedom.
