New initiative aims to give every pregnant woman in Sokoto access to safe delivery and save lives.
Sokoto State has inaugurated a task force headed by Health Commissioner Dr. Faruk Wurno to implement the Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative (MAMII). The program will start in four LGAs hardest hit by maternal deaths, ensuring pregnant women can access safe deliveries with support from health insurance schemes. The initiative aligns with Gov. Ahmed Aliyu’s Smart Agenda and aims to strengthen healthcare at the grassroots. Federal partners emphasize upgrading health centers and improving emergency transport systems for timely care. The Sultanate also backs the project, pledging community mobilization for greater awareness and participation.
Maternal mortality remains a major challenge in Nigeria, especially in northern states. Factors include limited access to quality healthcare, delays in emergency transport, and shortages of trained health workers. MAMII addresses these by boosting infrastructure, upgrading health centers to Basic and Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care standards, and deploying emergency ambulance services. It prioritizes vulnerable women through social health insurance and community engagement for preventative care. This integrated approach aims to reduce deaths and improve maternal health outcomes sustainably.
