Nigeria calls for a stronger, more relevant UN to address today’s challenges.
At the 80th UN General Assembly, President Bola Tinubu, represented by Vice-President Kashim Shettima, stressed the urgent need to reform UN policies to keep pace with global changes. Highlighting the UN’s failures in addressing ongoing crises and slow progress on Security Council reform and nuclear disarmament, Tinubu warned that the UN risks losing relevance unless it embraces meaningful restructuring. He also emphasized Africa’s vital role in global stability, urging fair benefits from its strategic minerals through local processing and partnerships.
Tinubu positioned Nigeria’s economic transformation as a model for developing countries and called for a UN that bridges the gap between words and action to restore global trust.
