Nigeria pushes for fair global representation and peace at the UN’s 80th General Assembly.
President Bola Tinubu, represented by Vice-President Kashim Shettima at the UN General Assembly, underscored Nigeria’s call for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council as part of essential institutional reforms. Highlighting Nigeria’s evolution from a colony to a sovereign nation of over 236 million, Tinubu framed the demand as key to restoring the UN’s relevance and fairness. He emphasized Nigeria’s role as a regional stabilizer, committed peacekeeper, and advocate for multilateralism grounded in shared responsibility.
Tinubu also addressed Nigeria’s fight against insurgency, stressing that values, not just military force, secure long-term victory. He condemned violence against civilians worldwide from Gaza to Qatar urging the international community to recognize that such conflicts have far-reaching consequences beyond their origins. His powerful message called for unity, tolerance, and justice as pillars for lasting peace.
