Africa’s growth demands fair trade, debt relief, and an end to conflict for true global progress.
At the 80th UN General Assembly, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa highlighted Africa as “irreversibly on the rise” and urged decisive action to end global conflicts and promote sustainable development. He pointed to South Africa’s historic G20 presidency hosting the first summit on African soil, focusing on disaster resilience, debt relief, and energy transition. Ramaphosa stressed the need to lift economic embargoes, like against Cuba, and called for international justice on Gaza, condemning alleged genocide and asserting that freedom is indivisible.
Ramaphosa also emphasized the erosion of the UN’s authority by increasing reliance on unilateral military actions, highlighting crises in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Sudan. He urged member states to uphold Palestinians’ right to self-determination and called on the International Court of Justice to officially recognize and halt the genocide in Gaza. His message reinforced the principle that denying the rights of any diminishes the freedoms of all, underscoring a call for global solidarity and justice.
