Debt relief is a pathway to growth, not charity, says Nigeria at UNGA.
President Bola Tinubu, speaking at the UN General Assembly and represented by Vice-President Kashim Shettima, called for urgent action on debt relief as crucial for peace and prosperity, urging the creation of a global mechanism to manage sovereign debt fairly. He highlighted Africa’s rich mineral resources and the African Continental Free Trade Area as keys to sustainable growth and stressed that investment in local processing can reduce conflicts fueled by resource competition.
Tinubu emphasized Nigeria’s commitment to the SDGs and welcomed peace moves in the Democratic Republic of Congo, urging reforms to strengthen international financial systems and unlock new opportunities for African trade, investment, and development.
