Calm, respectful campaigns urged as electioneering kicks off in FCT.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has cautioned political parties involved in the 2026 Federal Capital Territory Area Council election to avoid using provocative and abusive language during their campaigns. According to Mr. Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, campaigns officially began on Wednesday and will end at midnight on February 19, 2026. He emphasized that it is unlawful for parties or candidates to engage in physical attacks, use abusive language, or destroy opponents’ campaign materials, in line with the Electoral Act 2022.
Olumekun also reminded parties that all candidates must have unimpeded access to public facilities for media campaigns, outdoor advertising, and public rallies. Additionally, Section 95(2) of the Electoral Act prohibits the misuse of incumbency for electoral advantage or disadvantage. The FCT area council election is scheduled to hold on Saturday, February 21, 2026, and INEC calls on all stakeholders to conduct peaceful and fair campaigns in adherence to the law.
