FEMALE REPORTERS URGED TO EMBRACE IMPACT JOURNALISM FOR SOCIETAL CHANGE

Female reporters called to build capacity, tell authentic women’s stories, and drive meaningful change.

Fellows of the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism’s ReportWomen 2025 Female Reporters Leadership Programme (FRLP) have urged women journalists across Nigeria to focus on impact journalism that transforms society. Speaking at the 6th Fellowship Induction and Award in Lagos, senior correspondents like Aisha Gambo highlighted the need for zeal, determination, and ethical reporting that serves the public good.

Gambo encouraged female journalists to build their skills and use their voices boldly to influence social change. Managing Editor Christiana Alabi-Akande stressed journalism’s role in offering solutions, not chasing “brown envelopes,” reminding peers that impactful stories must uplift communities and solve real issues.

Rasheedat Iliyas of Harmony FM called on women reporters to tell women’s stories authentically, arguing men cannot fully represent female experiences. She advocated for balanced representation to ensure women’s voices are heard and respected. Jemilat Nasiru, a staff writer at The Cable, rounded off the message by urging women to build confidence and competence in investigative reporting, as some stories only women can tell.

The programme includes fellows from leading media houses such as NAN, Bond FM, Big Cabal Media, and The Punch. Awards went to Alabi-Akande (first prize), Iliyas (second), and Nasiru (third), recognizing their commitment with laptops and cash prizes.

This leadership programme is seen as a powerful platform empowering female journalists to shape Nigeria’s media landscape by promoting stories that matter and celebrating women’s achievements across the nation.
