MENTAL HEALTH CARE IN NIGERIA AT RISK WITHOUT FUNDING AND FULL POLICY IMPLEMENTATION

Experts warn millions may lack mental health support unless Nigeria commits budget and reforms now.

At the National Health Financing Policy Dialogue, experts emphasized the urgent need for dedicated funding and full rollout of the National Mental Health Act. Prof. Taiwo Sheikh lamented the absence of a mental health budget, while advocates called for a dedicated federal department and public-private partnerships to improve service delivery. The Ministry of Health affirmed commitment to reforms but stressed coordinated efforts are essential to make mental health care accessible and sustainable.
