INSPIRED LEADER, LASTING LEGACY: SALUTING SOLOMON EHIGIATOR ARASE

Solomon Ehigiator Arase was more than just a police officer; he was a visionary who reshaped Nigerian policing and empowered generations. His journey from a disciplined youth in Edo State to Nigeria’s 18th Inspector-General of Police is a story of dedication, reform, and relentless service.
Born in 1956, Arase’s commitment to education laid the groundwork for his impactful career. Armed with degrees in Political Science, Law, and advanced military studies, he was ready to lead with wisdom and strength. Joining the police in 1981, he climbed ranks with distinction, serving as Commissioner, Assistant Inspector-General, and leading Nigeria’s Criminal Intelligence. His international stint in a UN peace mission in Namibia added to his global outlook.
Arase’s tenure as Inspector-General from 2015 was marked by bold reforms that built trust and professionalism within the force – such as setting up the Police Complaints Response Unit, establishing an elite Intelligence Response Team, banning invasive phone searches by officers, and championing forensic science and community policing. His concern for the welfare of officers and civil liberties set new standards.
After retirement, his passion never waned. He chaired critical security reform bodies, led the Police Service Commission, and founded a scholarship foundation supporting the children of fallen police officers. His legacy of integrity and reform earned him national honours like the CFR and National Police Medal.
Passing away at 69 on the 31st of August, 2025, Arase leaves behind a Nigeria safer and more just, with a legacy that inspires continued progress and empowerment for Nigerian youth.
