In a political twist, Matthew Yare, the PDP Speaker of Abuja Municipal Area Council, was impeached by eight APC council members. With the majority now in APC hands, they swiftly elected Jankaro Ibrahim from Kabusa ward as the new speaker.
The move came after a morning session that turned from lawmaking to a power shift, sparked by a motion from Mathias Aliu of Wuse ward. Yare called it an ignorant act but is reserving comment for now.
The shake-up follows the executive chairman’s defection from PDP to APC, boosting APC’s council strength ahead of the 2026 elections.
