Women face widespread violence and stereotypes in Nigerian politics, blocking their representation and impacting governance.
Mrs. Adebisi Adetunji, Executive Director of ARDA, warned at the AWPP Project that 60% of women politicians have suffered violence or harassment, deterring participation and perpetuating a male-dominated political system. Patriarchal norms and harsh stereotypes limit women’s leadership roles and voter support. She urges education, gender quotas, affirmative action, and family-friendly policies to support women’s political involvement and tackle gender-based violence.
