New US rules aim to curb long-term stays for foreign students and media pros—but critics warn of disruption and talent drain.
The Department of Homeland Security plans to limit F visas for international students to a maximum of four years, down from the full length of academic programs that can exceed five years. Journalists’ visas would be capped at 240 days, extendable once for another 240 days but not beyond their assignment duration. Extensions will require fresh applications and security checks.
DHS says the move addresses security risks and visa abuses, but education leaders warn it could disrupt studies, add burdens on universities, and discourage global talent from coming to the US.
