THE ABUJA SCHOOL OF SOCIAL AND POLITICAL THOUGHT-TAS, CALLS FOR INEC REFORM: BAN PARTY MEMBERS FROM COMMISSION APPOINTMENTS

To restore credibility, the Abuja School of Social and Political Thought urges tough new rules blocking political appointees and party members from INEC leadership roles.

TAS recommended a constitutional amendment barring anyone who held party positions or government appointments within the last five years from INEC roles. They also want a five-year cooling-off period after INEC tenure before taking any political roles. The group supports transferring INEC appointments from the President to the National Judicial Council for impartiality.

Additional proposals include mandatory electronic transmission of election results, expanded rights for election outcome challenges, and harsher measures against vote buying. Stakeholders from NLC, TUC, and CUPP echoed calls for stronger reforms to boost democracy and voter participation in Nigeria.
