A major drug cartel at Kano Airport has been exposed, revealing how unsuspecting Nigerian pilgrims were framed and detained in Saudi Arabia.
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has cracked a major drug smuggling ring at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport. They arrested 55-year-old kingpin Mohammed Ali Abubakar aka Bello Karama and five others.
This syndicate secretly tagged drug-filled bags onto three Nigerian pilgrims’ luggage without their knowledge, leading to their wrongful arrest in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. NDLEA confirmed that Mrs. Maryam Hussain Abdullahi, Mrs. Abdullahi Bahijja Aminu, and Mr. Abdulhamid Saddiq are innocent victims caught in this scam.
Investigations showed corrupt airport staff at Skyway Aviation Handling Company colluded with the cartel, taking bribes to check in these illegal bags under the pilgrims’ names. Some suspects have already confessed and face court charges.
NDLEA Chairman Brig.-Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa is actively negotiating with Saudi authorities for the pilgrims’ release, assuring Nigerians that no citizen will be abandoned in the fight against drug trafficking.
