Researchers in Ethiopia’s Afar Region have uncovered a previously unknown Australopithecus species alongside the oldest confirmed Homo genus fossils, dating back 2.6 to 2.78 million years. This groundbreaking find reveals that two early human ancestors coexisted in the Lower Awash Valley, reshaping our understanding of human evolution.
The discovery includes 13 hominin teeth, with a premolar pushing back the earliest Homo presence in Eastern Africa, highlighting Ethiopia’s role as the cradle of humankind.
