Nigeria’s Women Leaders Turn the Tide on Menstrual Health with New Policy Validation

Menstrual health is finally getting the star treatment it deserves in Nigeria — and it’s all hands on deck in Abuja!

In a vibrant gathering in Abuja, key players in Nigeria’s women affairs and health sectors came together to validate the country’s National Policy on menstrual health and hygiene management. The event, hosted by the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs (FMWA) in collaboration with the Technical Working Group on Menstrual Health and Hygiene Management (TWG-MHHM), marked a significant milestone in addressing menstrual challenges once and for all.
From left to right in the spotlight were Dr. Maryam Keshinro, representing the Minister of Women Affairs; Hon. Edema Irom, Dean of Commissioners for Women Affairs in Nigeria; and Dr. Jane Bevan, UNICEF’s Chief WASH expert for Nigeria. Alongside commissioners and other key stakeholders, they validated the policy aimed at improving menstrual health across the nation – signal firing a new era for hygiene management and women’s empowerment in Nigeria.
This meeting underlines a clear message: periods will no longer hold Nigerian women back.
