Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, Nigeria’s former UN ambassador and ex-Chief of Staff, says global deaths from armed conflicts soared from 50,000 to 400,000 between 2004 and 2024, with 56 ongoing conflicts—the highest level since WWII. He insists that peace depends on good governance, justice, and inclusive societies, not just military might.
At the Naval Warfare Course in Calabar, Gambari emphasized the need for strong institutions, continuous training, and a “sticks and carrots” approach to manage peace spoilers in Africa. He urged military officers and leaders to focus on education, communication, and whole-society strategies for sustainable peace.
