AKUFO-ADDO WARNS CORRUPTION IS AFRICA’S BIGGEST GOVERNANCE CHALLENGE

Former Ghana President Nana Akufo-Addo says corruption remains Africa’s most persistent governance problem despite institutional reforms. Speaking at Nigeria’s National Defence College graduation in Abuja, he revealed over two-thirds of African countries scored below 50 on Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index in 2023.

Akufo-Addo highlighted that many anti-corruption agencies are weakened by political interference and underfunding, but praised Rwanda and Botswana for success with independent, well-resourced bodies. He stressed corruption’s threat to development and the need for political will, strong laws, citizen engagement, and tech innovations like blockchain to boost transparency.

Advocating for truly independent institutions, he called for urgent collective action to bridge Africa’s governance gaps and secure its future.
