FG ADOPTS FIRST NATIONAL POLICY ON MENSTRUAL HEALTH TO EMPOWER WOMEN AND GIRLS

The Federal Government, in collaboration with partners, has validated Nigeria’s first-ever National Policy on Menstrual Health and Hygiene Management (MHHM) to tackle barriers faced by millions of women and girls nationwide. Minister of Women Affairs, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, highlighted that menstruation should never restrict education, health, or dignity.

The policy aims to break stigma, improve access to affordable sanitary products, WASH facilities, and education, while embedding menstrual health into national development goals by 2030. It reflects President Tinubu’s commitment, including sanitary towel waivers, and calls for multi-sector collaboration to ensure no girl misses school or a woman’s progress is hindered by menstruation.

Partners like Population Services International and WaterAid Nigeria stress menstrual health as a human rights and gender equality issue, urging widespread access, education, and hygiene infrastructure to foster empowerment and inclusion across urban and rural communities.
