FEMALE JOURNALISTS CALL ON MEDIA BOSSES TO PRIORITIZE THEIR SAFETY

Female journalists are urging media owners and managers to take full responsibility for protecting reporters—especially women—from threats like online abuse, sexist attacks, and physical violence. The call comes from a two-day workshop in Abuja organized by Media Rights Agenda (MRA), highlighting the growing dangers female reporters face in today’s hostile environment.

The communique stresses the need for regular threat assessments, mentorship, and a national protective network—anchored by the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ)—to strengthen peer support and advocacy. Media houses must also provide safe transportation, accommodation, and financial aid during risky assignments. Participants affirm that ensuring female journalists’ safety is vital to media freedom, democracy, and national progress.
