Victims of the devastating July 28 flood inYola, Adamawa, which killed 23 and affected about 4,000 households, are urging the Federal Government to launch an independent probe into a local mining company’s dam for allegedly releasing excess water that worsened the disaster. They claim state officials cleared the company despite video evidence showing water rushing from its dam.
Residents warn that mining activities may have destabilized the terrain, destroyed farmland, and contributed to the flooding’s severity. Some accuse government officials of shielding the company, raising tensions in the community. Health concerns also loom over potential chemical contamination from the mining dam’s water. Meanwhile, the state’s Commissioner for Environment insists the company acted legally and that the dam’s spillway safely manages overflow, denying it caused the flooding scale.
The victims want federal and international agencies to intervene, restoring public trust and ensuring accountability in preventing future tragedies.
