Liberia’s Agriculture Minister, David Akoi, is teaming up with Jigawa State to transform Liberia’s rice industry and cut heavy import reliance. On a study visit in Dutse, Akoi praised Jigawa’s success in rice cultivation and vowed to apply lessons learned to help Liberia produce at least 70% of its rice needs—cutting down imports and ensuring food security.
Governor Umar Namadi welcomed the collaboration, highlighting Jigawa’s expanding rice fields—from 70,000 hectares last year to a target of 300,000 by 2030—and efforts to modernize farming with irrigation, new machinery, and a tractor hiring scheme to boost production and tackle climate challenges. This partnership is set to strengthen agriculture and livelihoods in both regions.
