Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) is stepping up admission standards with mandatory drug tests for 4,500 hopeful students. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Bilkis Lafiaji-Okuneye revealed the move follows a past incident involving a drug-addicted student, aiming to ensure a healthy, disciplined student body and uphold the school’s teacher-training reputation.
No matter how good their UTME or SSCE scores are, candidates must be drug-free before admission. While the testing adds cost, it’s crucial for nurturing future teachers with strong morals and resilience. Lafiaji-Okuneye also urged parents to focus on early moral guidance and discourage shortcuts like miracle centers for exam success, which ultimately harm students’ university performance.
