Amnesty International reveals that mob violence has claimed 555 lives in Nigeria over the last 11 years, averaging 55 deaths annually. Barbara Magaji, Programme Manager, highlighted that many victims were unjustly attacked over false claims of witchcraft or theft, often triggered by public alarms. She urged Nigerians to stop taking the law into their own hands and rely on police and judicial systems for justice.
Magaji stressed that mob killings violate the right to life and called for peaceful reporting of suspects to authorities, not mobs. The study covered all six geopolitical zones, with witchcraft accusations notably common in Cross River.
